Making High-Quality Food Choices

This week’s Better Body Resolution Challenge is to make a grocery list, and we hope you’re participating with us! This is a great time to think about how you create your grocery list and, most importantly, what you put on it. As you make your grocery list and do your shopping for the week, we encourage you to put an emphasis on choosing high-quality foods!

High-Quality Food

Many eating plans focus on quantity over quality. But while the quantity of the food you eat is important, the quality of your food makes a big difference in your health. If you eat four hundred calories of potato chips, that’s going to affect your body much differently than eating four hundred calories of salmon and green beans would! Whether you’re looking to lose weight, gain weight, or simply improve the way you eat, high-quality foods including lean protein, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats should play a vital role in your diet.

So how do you choose high-quality foods that fit into those categories? Start by choosing whole foods whenever you can. Whole foods are foods that either haven’t been processed at all or have been processed as little as possible. This means keeping everything as close to its natural form as possible. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and meat all fall into this category, so choose them as the bulk of your diet.

When it comes to other foods, pay attention to what you’re eating! If your food comes with a label, make sure you read it carefully. Greek yogurt, for example, is usually marketed as healthy. But some flavored varieties can have as much sugar as a donut! Whether it’s yogurt, whole-grain bread, pasta, or any other foods, look for varieties that are low in added sugars and high in essential nutrients such as protein, vitamins, and minerals.

The way you prepare your food also makes a difference. A high-quality meal of chicken, sweet potatoes, and broccoli is a great choice. But if you toss the chicken and the sweet potatoes in the deep fryer and cover the broccoli in a heavy sauce, it’s not going to be nearly as healthy or nutrient-dense. Be sure to cook your meals in healthy ways, such as baking, steaming, or roasting.
